  • Résumé

My passion for cannabis began in 2008 as a college student in Seattle. For my oral thesis, I researched the history of cannabis prohibition and the War on Drugs. This research opened my eyes to the incredible medicinal, economic, and environmental benefits of the cannabis plant. I was struck by its potential to positively impact the world and appalled by its stigmatization and outlawing throughout much of the 20th century.

On November 6, 2012, witnessing Colorado's legalization of recreational marijuana, I knew I had to be part of the emerging industry. Within two months, I moved to Denver, seeking a cheap apartment and an entry point into the cannabis industry.

My first role was as a trimmer at the Denver Clone Store. My three years at DCS were an intensive "cannabis bootcamp." I collaborated closely with other cultivators, gaining hands-on experience and learning how to grow high-grade cannabis. To further my knowledge, I even set up a home grow in my studio apartment to experiment with different nutrients and growing methods. By the end of my time at DCS, I was the Veg and Clone Manager, overseeing dozens of mother plants, hundreds of vegetative plants, and thousands of clones.

My next opportunity was as Cultivation Operations Manager at Tetra, a large-scale wholesale grow in Denver. There, I applied my newfound knowledge and skills, tripling their yields, halving nutrient costs, and maximizing output through simple, yet effective, efficiencies and Standard Operating Procedures, all within a year, with a small crew and a shoestring budget.

Following Tetra, I worked as a supervisor in the packaging and processing department at The Health Center. This experience taught me how a large-scale commercial operation efficiently harvests, trims, and processes hundreds of pounds of cannabis monthly. After my time at THC, I had gained comprehensive experience in commercial cannabis cultivation, having worked at every cultivation level from seed to package. It was time for the next step in my career.

In January 2018, I relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada, to join State Flower Cannabis as their Post-Harvest and Processing Manager. Like many new cultivations, they faced challenges navigating the complex regulations of a nascent recreational marketplace while striving to maintain top-shelf quality cannabis. Leveraging my years of experience, I helped them develop an efficient and scalable post-harvest department, establish effective testing procedures, and implement a robust and precise inventory management system. This system met and exceeded all compliance standards while consistently producing high-quality flower, trim, and pre-rolls.

Eventually I transitioned to their Inventory Control and Compliance Manager, and I helped foster a culture of compliance, consistency, and quality within the company, which enjoyed a  stellar reputation with the Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board.

After 7 years, I was recruited to be the Director of Operations at a struggling local cultivation that was part of an MSO based in Michigan. The Vegas operation was in dire straits and on the verge of closure. I helped them complete a major expansion project that had been stalled for years, which tripled the size and output of their operation. I also streamlined processes and implemented new improvements and efficiencies, including robust compliance and quality control protocols. We also launched new brands, partnerships, and SKU's which increased sales and our presence in the industry. We are also working to open a Production facility to begin processing solventless extraction and implement automated packaging.

I've even been able to put my artistic skills to use by designing new merch.

After a year plus on the job, I have been able to completely turn around the operation, increase quality and consistency, and rebuild their shattered reputation. Achieving this has been challenging to say the least, but truly worthwhile endeavors rarely come easy.
